Varme Energy

Varme in Canada

We're Industry Pioneers

In many parts of the world the Waste to Energy industry has been established and integrated within society. Until now, Canada has severely lacked both the regulatory landscape and long-term waste management vision to enable the adoption of waste to energy.

Varme Energy is that vision.

We have identified the market opportunities for waste to energy with carbon capture and storage and we are pioneering the industry forward in Canada.

We leverage proven waste to energy technology and extensive industrial experience from our Scandinavian partners which has accelerated the advancement of our projects here in Canada.

Landfill Free - Carbon Free

Varme Energy is changing the future of waste in Canada. We are the first Canadian energy development company focused on waste to energy with integrated carbon capture. This industry is a bottom-up waste management solution that is in its infancy in Canada. By diverting waste from landfills, recovering the energy trapped in waste, and producing clean energy, Varme Energy is building a future free from landfills.

97% of post-recycled waste in Canada ends up in a landfill. This accumulation of waste degrades into methane, accounting for 23% of our country's entire methane emissions and significantly contributing to our nation's climate impact. By eliminating this methane source, and capturing the CO2 emissions from the combustion process, we are generating 'carbon negative' energy. Our projects will have the ability to deliver this energy in the form of electricity, industrial heating, and district heating to help our partners and communities reach their net-zero ambitions.

Why Canada

Canada has made commitments to take real action against Climate Change. There are several enabling factors for developing our projects in Canada including;

  • Investment tax credit for carbon capture and storage
  • Globally competitive carbon pricing benchmarks
  • Supportive financial instruments such as the Carbon Contract for Differences program

Why Alberta

We are proud to be an Alberta based company with our office headquartered in the City of Edmonton.

We have identified Alberta as a strategic market opportunity for our projects due to several key market-enabling factors.

  • Alberta is home to a world-class geological structure for carbon capture and permanent sequestration, the world’s largest CO2 pipeline, and a handful of the world’s largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, Alberta is a global leader in CCS. Varme's projects will be deeply integrated with the Province's booming carbon transportation and storage industry.

  • Alberta has a deregulated electricity market, allowing projects to be built by private industry and deliver energy to the provinces' electrical grid or behind the fence with independent offtakers.

  • Alberta's Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) Regulation within Alberta is responsible for one of the most advanced compliance grade carbon credit markets in North America. Our projects benefit from the transparent and science-based approach to calculating and designating environmental attributes.
